Thanks to Jordan Hines for the help with these renderings... The whole project was designed in less than a week and all production material was done in another week, so without Jordan's help, it wouldn't have been finished.

This dude's been like everywhere lately... Really blowing up... I really like his Latent City proposal and his City of Factory proposal, and I find his graphics intriguing, it seems the latest stuff he's been doing is almost a bit overdone (though he does it incredibly well)... Hyper rationalized machines for housing are cool and all, but I don't see the amount of intellectual rigor in them that I see in the urban schemes... They seem "cooler" and have a great deal more technical skills embedded in them but not smarter... Still... This guy is going places and I can see this stuff really starting to influence what I do in the future.

I just can't say no... I've been put in charge of getting a team together to design the Singapore pavilion for the World Cities Summit. Its a very high profile, very high budget project with a great deal of curatorial intent... The political dynamic of this project is going to be extremely interesting as it represents the government. This is last year's proposal, from an interior design/ graphic design firm from Singapore, Asylum.

Working on the Studio Works exhibition right now... Very hard to design a space for other designer's work in a design school... noone's gonna be happy.... Trying to do something more designed and less simply an exhibition of work. I'm thinking something that espouses not only the school's particular pedagogy and process of work, but also on a projected view towards what curation of contemporary artifacts could be (ie, something beyond a jewel box or pedestal position).

So... ETB Studio just won a competition for a Multifunctional Center in Sappada, Italy. It is a Venice based firm with principals matteo bandiera and alessandro tessari. I really like their rendering/ diagram/ model aesthetics... Everything is very different but it all works very well together. The projects themselves are quite subtle and nice, though they do rely highly on their graphic sensibilities. Very beautiful and painterly... I wonder if the contexts are really that dramatically awesome... Here are some of their projects:

So the contractors have done a mockup (before the final cutsheets were sent to them...) This is the result. The holes have major issues that need to be resolved and the material is changing to a cabinet grade plywood instead of mdf and the footing detail needs to be changed (they beefed it up out of fear so I'm gonna have to come up with something better...), but the seams look clean and it is standing up which makes me happy. Plus its being done... Which is cool...

Here's the process shots of a pavilion I'm doing in Singapore with Thomas Schroepfer and Dan Weissman. It is a super fast project... We got the info for it last week and the design is supposed to be done sunday. The fabrication drawings are supposed to be done the following week... Going to be a hard week for me... Anyways... Here's a couple process images. Its not this dark and scary, but I just like it better this way... There are a bunch of kinks that need to be worked out with the geometry/ fabrication method, but this gives an idea of the intent.

edit: and apparently I have to change everything about this. got some stuff to take care of.

So I havn't written an actual blog post in a while... Most have just been recent work I've been doing... But now that I have time and am gainfully unemployed, I'll try to have an opinion about stuff again...
So this was just announced. I'm sure everyone in Kentucky has already heard about it and everything, but I just found out. I remember the fiasco a few years ago with the original Centerpointe shown here:

Kinda pathetic right? A mega block that kinda looks like an actual middle finger to the city with absolutely no context... Plus in order to create it, they destroyed the best block in the city. Really the only urban block in the city.... It had the only nightclub, the only decent billiards bar, the only lesbian bar, a haberdasher (I really don't use that word often enough), and a super old jewlery pawn shop, and what I think might have been a strip club? May also have just been a douche bar. Either way... It was a pretty cool block with alot happening every night. The only real nightlife in the city that doesn't require driving. That said, the Webb's (think redneck Portman minus the ideology) mowed it down without enough funding to construct the monstrosity they proposed. Alas, the site stood empty for a while. Hundreds of proposals were created for it including (some of my favorites):

There were a great many more proposals, many of which I can't find now, but they're out there... Anyways, none of it impressed the Webbs. Finally though, they have a new proposal which I think should quiet most naysayers in the city, though I admit, I am still quite unimpressed with the tower... I mean come on Jeanne Gang... You can do better that this:

It looks like they just too the original tower and rearranged it not to be symmetrical.. Same silly floating roof gardens, same stupid filleted corners, same ugly pseudo shiny steel facade. Same awkward window openings. The rendering makes it look much better than this Graves-esque model:

I wasn't buying the proposal either until I saw they had plans to develop the whole site in conjunction with 5 local architects; David Biagi (most known for being the head of the Architecture school), CSC Design (little confused about this one... maybe they just thought they needed a sustainable architect? Dick Levine mostly does solar houses out in the burbs...), EOP (kinda the corporate go-to in Lexington.. Responsible for crap like this, still they do good work sometimes), Omni Architects (Easily the best name on the list.. This firm, if in any other city, would be an international name), Ross Tarant Architects (Seriously? Do they need any more work? They've been snatching up everything all over the state, snaking it from much better firms than themselves. Kinda bleh if you ask me...), and Pohl Rosa Pohl (I think this firm has alot to offer.. They havn't done anything big or super impressive, but they seem very Williams/Tsien to me... Might do something well. Met the owner one time at a bar with Clyde.. Quite a character, in a good way). Needless to say, the list has its ups and downs, but none of the selections (besides CSC) is really that surprising. They got the academic, the sustainable, the corporate, the popular one, and the artsy often forgotten one. Still, kinda wish they had given some other firms with potential talent a shot instead of just narrowing the field to 5 architects... Like had open competitions for the actual buildings instead of restricting the architects to that selection... Ah well. guess I just wanted Lucas/Schwering to have a swing. I know given the chance, they would make a pretty incredible building...
Back to the proposal. The thing that sold me was this diagram:

So much illustrator... Still it gets the point of the proposal across well. Decentralization, variation of scale, variation of program, some idea about urban infrastructure and circulation, some idea about sustainability... Good job Lexington, you have yourself a working urban proposal!
This diagram further sold me in that they actually responded to the original buildings on the site, something the original Webb design failed to do:

That little "shard building" though? That prob needs some rethought... I think they think so too, as it is avoided in the text and in all the renders.. Myabe its just a fill in for a midscale tower designed by one of the other firms mentioned... My bet would be EOP or Omni? Still, I'm pleasantly surprised by the urban proposal, even if I'm a bit let down by the tower itself... Maybe in time they'll make it a bit more elegant and I'll have nothing to complain about.

Also, the title of the article at the beginning. Genius.

Here's a small snippet of our entry into the Visualization Marathon 2010 sponsored by Seed Magazine, GE, and the MoMa at the Eyebeam in New York. The Harvard team consisted of Judy Fulton, Wes Thomas, Lauren Kim, and myself. Our topic was to confront the impact of energy on the planet in some way... We chose to disseminate it and create a physical artifact that could be easily understood and interacted with by a child. The child creates a projected 3d model of various aspects of energy consumption, population, and carbon emission in arious parts of the world.

Our last project, and the only one we had more than a week and half to do, was a rare books library in the North End of Boston (super dense Italian neighborhood). The site was jammed in the middle of a block spanning narrowly between two side streets. There was a Franciscan church across the street on one side and a super ugly apartment building adjacent to the site that had no dialogue with the street whatsoever. There were two primary site axises, one running perpendicular to the two streets and one running diagronally across the site dividing the site into two triangular spaces. From the offset, I used these axes to define my formal moves. I developed a wrapping surface system which would define and divide the programmatic elements of the library and would provide a broad based formal gesture that would efffectively be reflected the materiality of the building as well as the structural elements of the building.

Thick Wall- Project 2

This project was an initial study in part to whole relationships in relation to programmatic requirements. It was supposed to lead us into our next project, but I really didn't take anything from it.... Eh whatever. We were supposed to place 11 reading carrels in a thick wall condition of a library. The way I dealt with it was to randomly do whatever formal thing I wanted for fun based loosely on an idea of disparate seperation between light and heavy programmed moments to create an experiential affect in density.

This is the first project of the semester in studio... It was a random masonry aggregation project sans mortar, so the geometry of the brick had to be intelligent enough to span in compression as well as operate formally as a bottom-up dialectic.

Discretized Surface Tessellation

So yeah... Just finished my Projective Geometries project... I tried my hand at scripting and wrote two scripts that created two surfaces, one based on applying the secant method or quad panelization to a diagrid pattern on a doubly curved surface and the other a folded plate method on a doubly curved surface with varying degrees of thickness corresponding to the curvature of the base surface. I failed in getting the two to mesh together and create a seam sort of thing along the edges (think a pita pocket type edge). I did manage to get them to meet at the corners. I need to start with a point array rather than a uv surface next time....

Final Review Animation

Here is the final animation for the lock building project... Review went extremely well although I wasn't entirely satisfied with the final form... I had to scale it back dramatically from the mid review because I didn't have control over it... That was the main issue the jury had with the project. According to Mack Scoggin "When you start to lose control over your project, let it." In contrast Diane Lewis said "Understanding when you lose control shows a huge amount of maturity.".... If this was a longer project, i'd def. try to figure out a more complex geometric arrangement and formal analysis based on the logic of the shifting part based lofted surface... The one thing everyone on the review liked was that it was such a dramatic spatial manipulation (ie Spatial form to flat plane).

Week 1 pinup animation

Please forgive the roughness of this thing... It was not only the first moving animation i've ever done, but also the first time I've used maya or 3d max (the first few are done in max and the last couple in maya). i really need to work on maya lighting... i got the hdri mapping down in max (for the most part) but the maya stuff is just rough.... that said, this is just concept stuff. i havn't merged the site and form yet and when i do, it will leave the primitive world of the cube/ lofted cube axial rotation and make something more complex based on the movement over and under the lock.

and also... the music screwed up.. damnit.

Solar Decathlon Follow Up

So yeah... SD is going on now and I do not envy those people one bit. Seems like a lot of work....
Here is the complete UK house. Looks pretty awesome at night but kinda really boring and overly technical during the day. Basically my only contribution to this thing was the kitchen... Seems like they really only changed my lighting scheme in the kitchen. Currently they are 13th out of 20th with the technical competitions out of the way and the Architecture, Engineering and Market Viability ones still to go... So we'll see... I have a feeling it was a hard fight across the board.

In this assignment I had to put a house in a 7 foot wide plot between two houses with crazy huge overhangs on their roofs. i didn't want to touch them or really even deal with them too much except to contradict them... so yeah... here tis.

by far some of the worst stuff i've ever produced in my life. please forgive this... I was literally given no time for production and had to restart the project a day and a half before it was due. it really is terrible...
the project consisted of placing an elevator is a Loosian building which did not want to be an elevator building. My solution, after a force line based analysis of the building and its complexities, was to reprogram it to be an auditorium/ concert hall which retaining the existing circulation and overall character and experience of the building... so yeah...

*edit* apparently even blogspot thinks this stuff sucks and won't post most of it. imagine two axons, a section, and the plans being more complex and less edited down to nothing... i have no idea how blogger deletes stuff from my drawings but it does.

Bonnaroo Recap

Best shows:
1. Bon Iver: Beautiful. absolutely perfect. couldn't have been better. played all the right songs in the best possible order with the best possible delivery; both beautiful and melodic as well as powerful and dancy occasionally. Slowed it down and sped it up at the right times. ended with an amazing sing along to Wolves that got the crowd more psyched than i saw at any other show.
2. Phoenix: this came out of right field. I've heard their stuff on XM and decided it was ok at best, but their live show killed. It was so energetic and the band members had excellent stage presence.
3. Dillinger Escape Plan: This show was so out of place at Bonnaroo but damnit, these guys are talented. Show was incredible, both in terms of their performance and the mere fact so many people were into it. Granted it probably had the smallest crowd of the entire festival.... but you can't expect much from a bunch of tweaked out hippies. the pit was intense. still nursing bruises and a cut.
4. Animal Collective: Amazingly well performed. With the exception of the random hippie shaman dude standing right in front of us doing arm spasms, the show was flawless.
5. Okkervil River: Didn't expect much from these guys going into the fest in terms of live show, but they proved me hardcore wrong. Beautiful, energetic, and clear. They need to take lessons from Dillinger about stage action though.....

Worst shows/ Biggest Dissapointments:

1. The Decemberists: Seriously? You're going to play your entire new, shitty album through before playing songs people know and care about? You aren't going to play your best hits? You're going to come on half an hour late and act like a whiney pretentious prick the entire set? You're going to further insult us by playing "your worst song ever" which didn't even compare to the pile of crap that is your new album. Colin Meloy, I hope you seriously get eaten by a whale or something... Wonder where I got that from... def. not from your set........
2. Erykah Badu: You're no whitney houston/ aritha franklin/ etc etc. Don't pretend you're such a prima-donna. Coming on half an hour late and making your band perform a 15 minutes intro before you come out is lame and disrespectful.
3. Phish: You suck. Nothing else need be said
4. Girl Talk: Learn to use a freaking drum machine! Damn bass was off for more than half the set. Duct tape would also work great so that some scuzzy bitch dancing on top of your mac book won't knock out the cable. Also, if you don't want people to get crushed, quit inviting them to jump the barrier and come on stage. Just plain stupid.
5. Of Montreal: We are all sick of your gimmicks. Go eat steak at Outback or something and shut the hell up and for all things holy, quit trying so hard to look like david bowie in labyrinth.

Biggest Regrets:
1. That I didn't see more of Mars Volta... Oh well. Saw 4 songs or so.
2. Didn't stick around for more of Beastie Boys. Freaking NAS showed up!
3. That I didn't pack better shoes. Feet are killing me.....
4. Didn't get water soluble body paint... All the peace symbols covering my junk kept running off with the sweat....

So yeah. Loved the music but hated the whole Bonnaroo Culture thing... These people are wastes of human space and seriously should grow the heck up. When i talk to a 42 year old guy that used his families welfare check to buy tickets to bonnaroo and left his kids with his parents so that he could "get fucked up" all weekend, I worry about the types of people in this world.... Pathetic.....
On another note, there were tons of really cute bonnaroo girls. The only question I have is: Its cloudy and chilly out early in the morning, why are you wearing a bikini around? I mean, I appreciate seeing you in it, but is it really necessary or comfortable in these cirumstances? Can't you just wait until its sunny before stripping down?

Alright.... Yip. I like Bonnaroo's lineup/ grounds/ extras. Disliked the people and the pseudo propaganda they kept shoving down everyone's throats about being environmentally friendly. I wonder what the festival's carbon footprint was?
